Your responsibilities

Research associates will be expected primarily to teach and conduct research. The research associate will also have the opportunity to pursue further academic qualifications, in particular a doctoral dissertation. At least one-third of set working hours will be made available for the research associate’s own academic work.

  • conduct impactful research in the field of remote sensing and publish the results in peer-reviewed scientific journals
  • engage in teaching (2 LVS), supporting our commitment to educational excellence
  • pursue a doctorate within the project's scope, contributing to our excellent academic environment

Research focus of the position:

The research focus of the position offers a choice among several cutting-edge research topics within the land surface dynamics and natural hazards monitoring domain. Candidate may choose to focus on areas such as land use and land cover changes, land degradation, deforestation, and agricultural landscape monitoring including crop type mapping, yield modelling, and analysis of changes in crop systems. Alternatively, the focus can be on drought monitoring, assessment, and prediction, integrating satellite-based information with climate, crop, and socio-economic models. This flexibility allows for a tailored research path that aligns with the candidate's interests and expertise, contributing to broader themes of sustainable land use and climate adaptation strategies.

Your profile

A university degree in a relevant field.

We seek a dynamic candidate with a Master's degree in Geography, Remote sensing, Environmental Sciences or a related field with a focus on remote sensing or geoinformation, demonstrating proficiency in handling diverse geodata sources. Essential skills include a solid foundation in remote sensing and/or GIS, programming languages (Python, R), satellite data analysis, geospatial software, machine learning, and statistics. The role requires independent work as well as collaboration in an interdisciplinary team. An enthusiasm for applying interdisciplinary methods, engaging in fieldwork, and bridging Earth Observation with in-situ data collection is crucial. Excellent English skills for writing publications and scientific reports are mandatory, with German language skills advantageous but not essential.
