The Team:
The Med Mal underwriting team is based across our York, London and Colchester offices. The team are responsible for driving the profitable growth across Hiscox UK, in the Allied Healthcare sector.
The team are aligned to our regional development underwriting teams to ensure a seamless service to our brokers, leveraging relationships to support the profitable growth of new and existing business including cross-sell and up-sell.
The Role:
This is an exciting opportunity to join our specialist Med Mal underwriting team and play a pivotal role in expanding the scope of underwriting in order to develop our medical malpractice book. You will be joining a friendly team who come from a variety of different underwriting backgrounds and this role will offer the opportunity to help develop individuals in order to expand their knowledge into new areas.
Reporting into the Head of Medical Malpractice, this role will involve UK based travel and a commitment to work hard, developing large new opportunities within our extensive broker panel whilst also having a responsibility for renewing and servicing the existing account.
Key responsibilities
· To underwrite consistently and profitably
· To develop close, effective relationships with brokers
· To effectively negotiate with both internal and external parties including identified points of contact with a brokerage
· To maintain and develop internal and external customer relations
· To visit broker partners and write their business
· To identify and challenge non-standard underwriting decisions within the Technical Underwriting Guide (TUG), with a reasoned referral to an underwriting manager
· To identify non performing broker accounts in terms of overall profitability, retention and new business ratios and take remedial steps to improve this business
Key requirements
· A minimum of five years relevant Medical Malpractice underwriting or broking experience
· ACII qualification or progression towards this
· Demonstrable drive, self motivation and determination to achieve results
· Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills combined with a proven track record of relationship management and customer focus
Able to apply consideration to potential outcomes and to make decisions in difficult and complex situations. Able to make logical decisions by using key facts available

· Consistently demonstrates behaviours conducive to achieving both personal and team objectives, in line with the core values of Hiscox
· Preferably degree qualified with a minimum of 2 A levels at grade C or above, although this is not a pre-requisite for an experienced underwriter
