The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 800 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.0 billion euros.

Developing innovative technology solutions and bringing them to application - that is our goal at the Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems IPMS. With our expertise in the development of photonic microsystems, related technologies including nanoelectronics and wireless communication solutions, we create - in flexible and interdisciplinary teams - technologies for innovative products in a wide range of markets such as automotive, industrial and aerospace.

The development of new components and integration concepts for semiconductor devices with a wide range of applications is an important field of research at the Center Nanoelectronic Technologies (CNT) of the Fraunhofer IPMS. One research focus is on spintronic devices relying on magnetic and electric phenomena. For various market applications, increased requirements on the performance and reliability of those devices have to be met.

The topic of the PhD role will be in characterization of STT-MRAM arrays towards magnetic immunity. You will work together with our team of 10 people and industry partner to transfer these technologies into existing technology nodes. To understand underlying physical phenomena advanced electrical characterization methods on array level need to be developed and the influence of device manufacturing needs to be understood.

What you will do

In the context of a doctoral thesis the following tasks arise:

  • Single device and xMBit macro-level characterization of state-of-the-art perpendicular STT-MRAM
  • Focus on magnetic immunity test procedure development and reliability modeling
  • Extension to active write, active read and stand-by magnetic immunity under the influence of temperature, magnetic field strength and angle
  • Close collaboration with MRAM technology development to investigate the impact of magentic disturb fields on different MTJ stack designs
  • Effective summary of results and open discussion within the team
  • Communication with project partners and customers
  • Presentation of scientific results at conferences and publications in journals

What you bring to the table

  • Completed scientific university studies in the field of electrical engineering, physics, material sciences or comparable master's or diploma degree
  • Knowledge in at least one of the following areas is advantageous: electrical/structural characterization, memory technology, spintronic materials
  • Affinity to electrical test, reliability and modelling is of advantage
  • Analytical and structured way of thinking and working combined with strong communication skills and assertiveness
  • Good written and spoken English as a basis for working in an international team

The doctorate is awarded over a German partner university according to the higher education laws of the respective federal state. Scientific work is scheduled to be carried out at the Center for Nanoelectronic Technologies business unit at the Fraunhofer IPMS and partly at the site of our industrial partner in Dresden.
