Location: Basel, Switzerland Full time, onsite #LI-onsite The Biomedical Research division is the innovation engine of Novartis. We are currently seeking an agile, curious, and highly motivated Research Scientist to join our innovative Disease Area X (DAx), which encompasses hepatology (Liver), nephrology (Kidney), and fibrosis therapeutic areas. We seek candidates who have experience in one or more of the following areas of in vitro drug discovery: a) identifying and validating new targets with various molecular biology approaches, b) establishing and executing biochemical and cell-based assays for optimization of novel therapeutic modalities, c) innovating or establishing complex 3D in vitro model systems recapitulating disease traits. Key to success will be the ability to independently conceives appropriately controlled experiments that implement project strategy and increasingly lead to go or no go decisions. The ideal candidate for this position will possess skills in cell and molecular biology, with experience in developing and implementing in vitro models for target discovery and validation approaches. They will have a track record of independent work and a history of success in cross-functional teams. May bring new technique(s) into lab. Increasingly proficient at supporting multiple activities in parallel. Provides input to operational and/or strategic discussions related to own technical knowledge.

About the Role

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leverage molecular biology techniques to validate new targets

  • Conceive, plan, optimize, and execute in vitro cell-based and/or biochemical assays for mechanism of action and target validation studies

  • Leverage culture of primary cells and cell lines or organoids together with a variety of experimental endpoints flow cytometry, RT-qPCR, microscopy) to support project progression

  • Utilizes growing awareness of the drug discovery and/or early development pipeline to identify complex problems, present innovative solutions and drive their implementation.

  • Key member of drug discovery/technology/development project teams with regular accountability within the project for own area of expertise.

  • Utilizes established networks and builds new network connections, including outside of existing project team.

  • Clearly present results and data to teams within DAx Renal Research group and across BR

  • Work in compliance with the Novartis Code of Conduct and in accordance with Novartis guidelines on health and safety and data recording

Minimum Requirements - What you will bring to the role:

  • BSc or MSc (or equivalent) in Life Sciences (please note that we not require a PhD/Postdoctoral level candidaite for this position at this time).

  • Laboratory experience with 3-6 years experience in an industrial drug discovery setting

  • Demonstrable experience in the culture of human primary cells, including 3D complex cell models and/or organoids, including passaging, freezing, and aseptic technique.

  • Experience in a range of laboratory techniques, possibly including immunofluorescence, flow cytometry, ELISA, qPCR, Western blotting, and/or biochemical assays.

  • Track record of independent work and demonstrated creativity.

  • Experience working with cross-functional teams and serving as a point-of-contact for the team

  • Proficiency in computer use and laboratory software programs.

  • Proven excellent oral and written communication and organizational skills

Desirable Expertise:

  • Ability to independently design and interpret experiments and plan next steps with support from matrixed collaborators

  • Experience in development of assays for target validation and mechanism-of-action studies

  • Expertise in kidney diseases and their molecular mechanisms
