Job Summary

The Minnesota Department of Health's (MDH) Environmental Health Division is looking for an Assistant Director to join the team . The Assistant Director of the Environmental Health Division is responsible for division-wide policy development and analysis, establishment of rules and regulations relating to the protection of public health from environmental factors, oversight for division planning, and oversight of the division budget development. The Environmental Health Division has over 300 employees including toxicologists, research scientists, hydrologists, engineers, planners, sanitarians, nurses, and radiation specialists.

There will be an option for some teleworking, however, it will be based on the business needs of the unit and is at supervisory discretion. This position is involved in legislative and policy work which requires engagement with legislative committees. While teleworking is available, the eligible candidate will need to be have an in-office presence in a timely manner. Telework eligibility applies to applicants residing in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, North Dakota, or South Dakota.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

The following minimum qualifications must be clearly demonstrated on the applicant's resume/application to be considered for the position:

• Four (4) years of experience directing one or more major environmental health program areas and supervising professional level staff, which includes either oversight of planning or policy development.

A related bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree may substitute for one (1) year, eighteen (18) months, or two (2) years of experience, respectively.

Additional minimum qualifications to be assessed during the interview:
  • Knowledge of public health, environmental health, environmental hazards prevention, and assessment and control of environmental risks.
  • Excellent skills in the following areas:


o Human relations skills

o Management skills, including supervision

o Leadership skills

o Decision-making skills

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in an Environmental Public Health leadership position
  • Experience managing a state-wide program
  • Experience managing multiple overlapping projects that engage a variety of stakeholders
  • Experience managing policy and budget development through the legislative process

Physical Requirements
  • Transport items weighing 25 pounds.

Additional Requirements
  • This position requires successful completion of references and background check.
  • While a driver's license is not required, the position demands some travel, which the incumbent will be responsible for meeting.
