Dr. Oliver Schmidt

Head of the component 'Financial Sector Development' of the 'Promotion of Business, Advisory and Transformation Services (ProBATS)' project in Namibia. ProBATS is run by German International Cooperation (GIZ). My component works with the Namibian Ministry of Finance, Central Bank, Development Bank of Namibia and other stakeholders of the financial sector to expand financial services for small and medium enterprises.

I lead the largest faculty of Mountains of the Moon University with about 40 academic and administrative staff and about 900 students enrolled in under- and postgraduate study courses. Under my leadership, we ensured that all study courses were accredited by the regulator (Uganda's Higher Education Commission) and we developed, got accredited and introduced three new study courses. Furthermore, the faculty initiated and carried out several research projects, particularly in banking and microfinance.

I advised the team that build the new academic programme 'banking & microfinance', encompassing three new study courses (undergraduate) and research projects. In 2011, the work of the team was recognised by MMU senior management by turning it into the third academic department of the faculty of business and management studies.

I built the regional office of Sa-Dhan, the national umbrella of microfinance institutions in India. I created a team of 5 permanent staff and steered a couple of consultants. We handled the data management of the association and for that purpose I led a computerization project to support the operations managements.

I worked as an advsior of the Association of Microfinance Institutions of Uganda (AMFIU), seconded by the predecessor of Deutsche Gesellschaft of Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). AMFIU is the national umbrella organization of the microfinance sector of Uganda, encompassing central-bank-regulated (micro)finance institutions as well as cooperatives as well as other financial institutions. I supported AMFIU leadership, in particular developing and managing of member services and coordination of donors.

I advised companies to use internet-based tools for the B2B-purchasing process and organised trainings.

During my studies, I worke part-time as a telephone banking agent, both in- and outbound, for the subsidiary that organised then-new telephone banking for all the cooperative banks (Volks- und Raiffeisenbanken) in Northrhein-Westphalia.

Dual vocational training completed by a certificate of the Chamber of Trade and Industries (IHK) Arnsberg.
